How Long Will It Take to Learn to Drive?
At Valley School of Motoring, we know that everyone learns at their own pace. While the time it takes to learn to drive varies, the DVSA (Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency) recommends:
45 hours of professional instruction with a qualified driving instructor
22 hours of private practice outside of lessons
Keep in mind, your learning journey will depend on how much time you put in both during lessons and private practice.

1. Get Your Provisional Driving Licence
Before you can begin learning to drive, you must apply for a provisional driving licence. This is an official requirement that allows you to:
Learn to drive on public roads with a qualified instructor
Sit your theory and practical driving tests
Without a provisional licence, you cannot legally start driving lessons.
2. Pass the Theory Test
Before taking your practical driving test, you must pass the DVSA theory test, which consists of:
Multiple choice questions on the Highway Code
Hazard perception test
*please note: you can begin your practical driving lessons journey before passing your theory.
Theory guidance is provided throughout your in-car lessons, helping you apply your knowledge while learning practical skills. You can also use online resources to prepare.
DVSA Theory Test Fee: £23.00
3. Start Driving Lessons
You can take your first driving lesson on your 17th birthday, provided:
You hold a provisional driving licence
An instructor is available in your area

4. Take the Practical Test
The practical driving test is the final step in your learning journey. It evaluates your ability to drive safely on the road and apply all the skills you’ve learned.
